    Who Benefits

The Illinois Burn Prevention Invitational began in 1995 by Fred Kroll (Alliance Fire Protection) and Amos Miner (United States Fire Protection) to help raise funds to support "Camp I Am Me." The Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (IFSA) hosts this annual summer camp for children 8 to 16 years old who have experienced a significant burn injury requiring hospitalization. “Camp I Am Me,” formally Illinois Burn Camp, celebrates their 16th anniversary this year. Ninety-five children from Illinois, most from the Chicagoland area, spend a week at Camp Duncan near Fox Lake, participating in a wide-range of activities and events.

For most of the children, “Camp I Am Me” provides a setting that allows them to build self-esteem while learning to deal with their injuries, scars and the deep psychological trauma they often suffer. Camp provides an opportunity for the children to share their common experiences while being able to play, make new friends, have fun and not feel self-conscious. Funded through donations, there is no cost to the child’s family.

The camp is sponsored by the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance, a non-profit, volunteer organization whose purpose is to promote fire safety and provide educational programs for local communities. Ninety volunteers travel from throughout the state to staff the camp. Volunteers include firefighters, paramedics, fire chiefs, doctors, nurses and physical therapists.

Another portion of our fundraising efforts goes to the Loyola University Medical Center – Burn Center. Many of the children who attend “Camp I Am Me” were treated at Loyola for their burn injuries.
